A great career began in Vienna

Rafael Rotter began his ice hockey career in the offspring of the Wiener Eislöwen, for whom he also played games in the second-class national league in the 2003/04 season. After a year at EC Red Bull Salzburg, during which Rotter also made his debut at the top level in Austria, the forward joined the Guelph Storm in the Ontario Hockey League. Rotter played a total of 220 games for the team, which was later coached by Caps head coach Dave Barr. On 7 June 2007, the striker made his debut for the Austrian national team in a friendly match against Slovenia.

Champion, MVP, record holder

With the 2008/09 season, Rafael Rotter moved to spusu Vienna Capitals. The striker quickly became a crowd favorite in his hometown, a status he has survived to this day. The striker, who always acts with the utmost commitment, won his first and only championship title with the Viennese in the 2016/17 season. In the following season, Rotter again significantly increased their points. The forward totaled 71 points (30 goals + 41 assists) on his way to the 2017/18 MVP title. Rotter often struggled with injury problems in later seasons, which also affected his point tally. In the 2021/22 season, the Viennese took to the ice for Steinbach Black Wings Linz. Last season led the Rotters to comeback in yellow and black. Last season, the now 36-year-old scored 19 points (6 goals + 13 assists). The Viennese holds various records thanks to his performances in 14 seasons for the spusu Vienna Capitals. No other Caps player has amassed more than Rotter’s 531 points, 159 goals and 372 assists in all competitions. His 684 games are third-highest behind Phil Lakos (949) and Mario Fischer (689). Rotter scored 540 points in the win2day ICE Hockey League, putting the Viennese sixth on the all-time greatest list. His 382 assists are surpassed only by John Hughes and Thomas Koch.

The spusu Vienna Capitals thanks Rafael Rotter for 14 seasons and 684 games full of commitment and passion and wishes him the best for his private and sporting future. An official farewell to Rotters will take place at a future Caps event. Details of this will be announced at a later date.
