Sparkasse Salzburg Open: Misolic, Neumayer and Ofner in the quarterfinals

Jurij Rodionov is the only one of the ÖTV quartet to lose in the round of 16 of the ATP Challenger.

The home match at the Sparkasse Salzburg Open continues to go very well from a red-white-red perspective. With Filip Misolic, local hero Lukas Neumayer and Sebastian Ofner, three Austrians reached the quarterfinals of the ATP 125 Challenger at the 1st STC in the Volksgarten in Salzburg, all with victories in rather close straight sets. Misolic (ATP 141), placed eighth, defeated French special exempt starter Manuel Guinard (ATP 344) 7:5, 7:6 (5), wildcard starter Neumayer (ATP 269) beat Argentine Facunco Bagnis, seventh ( ATP 126) with 7:6(3), 7:5, the third classified Ofner (ATP 72) the Slovak Lukas Klein (ATP 152) with 6:4, 7:5. Only Jurij Rodionov (ATP 118), number six on the seeding list, could not follow his compatriots in Thursday’s round of 16 and lost with a 5:7, 4:6 against substitute Nerman Fatic (ATP 228) from Bosnia- Herzegovina a duel with Ofner.

3 ÖTV wins on center court

Misolic started on center court and got off to a strong start in meeting last week’s winner of the ATP 50 Challenger in Troyes (France). But Guinard turned 0:3 into 5:4 with a break and 30:15 with his own serve. With his back against the wall, “Miso” secured the first set with an excellent run of 11:2. In the second round, the Styrian lost a 4:1 lead this time, but was able to win the tie-break after being 0:3 and 2:5 behind with five points in a row. Neumayer then continued the round of 16 match that had been canceled Wednesday night at 4:5 and 15:0 on his own serve due to rain. With success: In the first set, which did not contain any counterattack possibilities, she still clearly had the upper hand in the tie-break after an initial 1: 2 deficit in the mini-break. In the second section she missed a total of five breakballs in her first three games back, in return she conceded serve loss at 3:4, but turned the tables with smooth breaks at 4:4 and 7:5.

Ultimately, Rodionov fared less well. The left-handed player from Lower Austria immediately loses his serve in both sets against Fatic. In the first round he managed to equalize the gap at 3:3, but another break at 5:5 made him lose the set. In the second half, however, he was unable to correct his false start despite a last chance break at 3: 4. “Today’s match was certainly not a brilliant result,” Rodionov said angrily on his official Facebook fan page. “Unfortunately today I couldn’t rely on my backhand.” In the end things went much better for Ofner, who, after the first counter-attack opportunities, scored on both sides for 4:3, later (as at 0:1 ) he was 0:40 behind 5:3 and at the finally was able to serve. The Styrian had to give up on the break for 2-1 in the second set when he was served, but he scored another one and then closed the sack.

The three quarterfinals of the doubles with local participation, however, did not go quite according to plan: Karlsruhe winners Neil Oberleitner and Tim Sandkaulen (Germany) lost to top seeds Nikola Cacic (Serbia) and Victor Vlad Cornea ( Romania) ) 6:4, 3:6 and 4:10 in the tiebreaker, Neumayer and Maximilian Neuchrist defeated Team Guinard and Sumit Nagal (India) 4:6, 3:6, wild card combination Peter Goldsteiner and Niklas Waldner defeated third placed Andrey Golubev (Kazakhstan) and Denys Molchanov (Ukraine) with 3:6, 3:6.

All Austrian quarterfinals live on ÖTV TV

Friday continues in Salzburg at 12:30, on Field 1 initially with the only individual quarterfinals without Austrian participation between the fifth classified Argentine Juan Manuel Cerundolo (ATP 111) and the Swede Elias Ymer (ATP 169) – and then the two doubles semifinals. The three quarter-finals with the ÖTV aces will instead be played on the central court. Misolic opens at 12:30 against the Slovenian Blaz Rola (ATP 723), the former world number 78 who came out of the qualifiers; not before 14:30 Ofner continues against Rodionov’s conqueror Fatic. And this time Neumayer will be able to enjoy the evening match (broadcast live on ORF SPORT+) like a local hero: The newly crowned double state champion from Salzburg will play against the Brazilian southpaw and defending champion Thiago Monteiro (ATP 95), who is ranked fourth, to do even better than in 2022, when it had also progressed to the quarterfinals. ÖTV TV broadcasts all center court games live again on www.oetv.tv, the match of ORF SPORT+ Neumayer from 17:30.
